Leading law firms signed legal market code of business ethics. The said document was prepared by the initiative group within the UBA Forum of law firms partners with the support of the President of the Ukrainian Bar Association.
The purpose of the document is to establish unified and transparent principles of business activities on the Ukrainian legal market and clear competition rules. The attendees condemned corruption schemes of business conduct and illegal lobbying of own and clients’ interests in state bodies; the leading law firms also condemned hostile takeovers and undertook to refrain from illegal methods in their work and especially in court processes. In addition to that the parties implemented a single unified policy in issues relating to personnel policy, legal services advertisement and many other burning issues which concern legal market players.
The signatories also undertook to bring other law firms to signing this legal market code of business ethics and employ best efforts to carry out control over their implementation.

The First Annual IFA Ukraine International Tax Conference took place on 13th June at the Radisson SAS Hotel in Kyiv.
The Conference provided a unique forum for discussion and was focused on several important areas in Ukraine’s international tax law and practice: Current International Tax Issues in Ukraine, Cross-Border M&A Transactions, Raising Financing in International Markets, and Structuring Foreign Investments into Ukrainian Real Estate.

On October 25th-26th, 2007 the 2nd Annual international conference «M&A in Russia and CIS: achieving synergies» took place in Berlin.

The followings questions were discussed within the framework of the conference: analysis of large M&A transactions, current state of M&A market, technologies of protection from unfriendly acquisitions, new legislative initiatives, practical analysis of different aspects of M&A transactions. Also during two days interactive discussions the most topical themes in M&A sphere were conducted.

On 27th -30th September the European Regional Meeting of International Lawyers Network took place in Istanbul, Turkey.
At the moment 89 law firms and over 5 thousand lawyers are members of the ILN all over the world.
The key topics of European forum in Istanbul became issues of the day, business and legal practice trends in Europe, collaboration of Turkey and European community, investment climate in Turkey and organizational issues of the ILN. Another discussion theme was the Strategic business-plan of International Lawyers Network.
Members from all of Europe visited the event. Candidate members were also invited.

The first constituent meeting of the International Fiscal Association’s Ukrainian branch (IFA Ukraine) recently took place in Kyiv. The IFA in Ukraine has been established with the support of both Magister & Partners attorneys-at-law and PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

IFA Ukraine will aim to develop and introduce the best world standards of taxation in Ukraine. Through this organization tax professionals will be able to develop their professional skills and qualification.
Participants of the meeting held at the Riviera Hotel also discussed membership issues and plans for further IFA activities in Ukraine. It was agreed that the IFA’s Ukraine branch would offer both individual and corporate membership options. More than 21 membership applications have already been received. The International Fiscal Association was represented at the meeting by Irina Rusakova, Chair Russian IFA Branch and Senior Tax Manager at PriceWaterhouseCoopers Russia.
Official registration of IFA Ukraine took place during the IFA Annual Congress in Kyoto, Japan on September 30 – October 4. Maksym Lavrynovych, Managing Partner, represented the Firm on the 61st annual Congress of the International Fiscal Association in Kyoto.

Main event of the year is an annual Congress, hosted by one of IFA’s Branches, which provides an opportunity for an exchange of knowledge and experience with respect to fiscal law.
Final LP’s affiliation will be made during first congress of Ukrainian IFA Branch in Kiev in September 2007.
